Community Education Initiatives

Making Connections, 1996-2002, a one-week full scholarship program for high school students is established as an annual program at Pyramid Atlantic. The program provided instruction in printmaking, bookmaking and career planning for college. Funded by the Maryland State Arts Council and private contributions.
Making Connections, Reading as Process, Art as Content, 1999-2003 a visual literacy initiative and accreditation program for teachers in Maryland to receive required 6 credits for reading in the classroom. The program featured a reading specialist, studio activities to produce artist books, visiting artists, museum field trips and lesson planning. Funded by Howard County and the Maryland State Arts Council.
Telling Their Stories, 2005, a 12 week long evening program for the immigrant population of South Silver Spring provided instruction with a folklorist, printmaker, paper artist, bookmaker and visiting artists to enable a diverse group of inter-generational ages to make artists books and present them to the public. Funded by the Maryland State Arts Council, the Maryland State Department of Economic Development and private contributions.
Page as Stage, 2006, a comprehensive visual literacy workshop program linking writers, visual artists, printers and students of various ages to the history and content of the printed page, with hands-on studio experience and performance presentations. Funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
